The Jerry Zaks Studio 6C Reviews
Nov 13, 2015
(This review was written for New 42nd St. Studios as a whole venue, and is posted on each of their listings.)
My name is Kitty Lunn. I am the Artistic Director of Infinity Dance Theater, a non-traditional dance company featuring dancers with and without disabilities.
I have had rehearsals at New 42 St. Studios for nearly Fifteen Years. As a wheelchair user, I have found the space very accessible for our needs. The staff are professional, friendly and helpful. They have nine floors with various size studio spaces with both Marley and wood floors, sound systems and pianos. Some studios have floor to ceiling windows that let in marvelous natural light! Changing rooms are accessible, including showers. Most floors have accessible bathrooms.
The only thing they are lacking are automatic doors. The doors at the entrance of the building are heavy, but someone is always around to help open them. The studio doors are also heavy and don’t have door stops. So if I need to bring extra dance chairs or props into the studio, someone needs to hold the Studio door open for me both coming in and leaving .
This space is located at the crossroads of the Theater District and easily accessible by subway and bus. Parking a car or van with a NYC handicap parking permit is usually available from 10-4 pm in front of the building. There are parking garages in the area, but it can be expensive. Keep in mind that Wednesdays and Saturdays are matinee days in the Theater District, and traffic is very heavy. Public transportation is recommended.
They have both not-for-profit and commercial rental rates. New 42 St. Studios have some very strict rules regarding what can and can not be brought into the space using the main elevators. The service elevator has to be reserved in advance. Be very clear when speaking with the space rental person about your project needs.
The space is perfectly suited for auditions and rehearsals. Showings/performances with an invited audience will cost more than the hourly rental rate.
I love rehearsing in this space. There is an energy about the space that is very supportive of the creative process.
