92nd Street Y has been a historic home of modern dance, nurturing the talents of such dance pioneers as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Anna Sokolow, Hanya Holm, Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, Robert Joffrey, Pearl Primus and Lester Horton. These artists created, performed and taught at 92Y, building the foundation for contemporary dance as we know it.

Today, with generous support from the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center continues to be a home for dance teaching, creation and performance, serving the professional world and the community at large.

Buttenwieser Hall is the Harkness Dance Center's primary dance performance space. This is our most spacious and elegant room with an inspiring history.

Subsidized dance rehearsal space for the creation of new work is also available at $10/hour.

First time applicants are required to complete both the Space Grant Application Form and the booking request to be considered.
